Rev. Mike Herring – “What’s God Been Doing Lately”

Rev. Herring has a powerful testimony of redemption. A recovering alcoholic, formerly homeless double amputee, Mike lives with faith and hope in the God who redeems our suffering and continues to use us for the furthering of the kingdom if we will yield our lives to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Listen in to hear what God has been doing lately. Then contact us to schedule Mike to come speak to your group and inspire you with his witness.

Mike’s reflections:

I don’t know about you, but God has been real busy with me lately. He spared my life when I could very easily have died.

I have diabetes and was not taking care of myself. I abused alcohol, prescription drugs, and I did not eat right. I was real sure I was going to live forever.

But God slowed me down. He had plans for me I couldn’t see at the time. I didn’t listen. First the high blood pressure, then the light heart attack, then the light stroke. Now the loss of both feet and both legs below the knee. OK1 I get the message.

God was ready for me to use my brain to start helping people again. I had become selfish with my time and didn’t realize it.

Am I bitter? Not any more because God has decided to use my gifts and talents in other ways. Instead of running and acting crazy with the youth group I should be talking with them about taking care of themselves and practice living the life God intended for them. Our youth have so much to offer we need to really listen to them.

And you adults need to humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, slow down and listen for direction. God calls us. God calls to listen, extend a helping hand, extend an open heart and grab hold of that person crying out for help!

You know what we have done with all of this? We’ve upset the devil. He can no longer prowl around looking for someone to devour. We’ve put him out of business because we have chosen to go with God! God loves us no matter what. He picks us up when we stumble, he forgives us when we sin, he loves us when we are not loveable. I don’t know about you but that’s as good of news as it gets. His only son died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. How much more do we need to know that we are the chosen ones to carry the message.

Having said all of this it does not mean we can go out and steal, rob a bank, get drunk. Forgiveness is for those of us trying to live right but fall short. We are all flawed human beings.

But if we do fall short, forgiveness is there for the asking.

God’s only son died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

I will end by saying what Paul so beautifully said in Philippians:

Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The LORD is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

AMEN!
