NOTES:
· Look at all 4 lectionary texts. Read them each and listen for what the Lord might be saying to you (us) in the text. Then read the context in the particular book to get a sense of the broader story or argument being made. Then listen for a common theme or spirit that runs through two or more of the texts for the week.
· The writer to the Hebrews highlights Noah’s obedience and faith – Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
Questions for reflection:
· The moral laws of the covenant given to Noah (Genesis 9) are similar to those given for the Gentiles in Acts 15:19-21. How does this relate to Paul’s teaching in Romans 3?
· Deut 11 – The means of teaching the covenant include hearing, seeing, meditating, as well as physical ritual acts. How can/do we make use of similar techniques today for taking God’s law into our lives?
· If I am not justified by the law, then what place does the law have in my life?
· How am I currently acting on Jesus’ words to me? In what one way can I do better?
PRAYER: Loving God, you have called me into covenant with you. Help me first to hear you amidst all the other voices in my life. Help me next to trust you even when what you ask of me is beyond my reasoning. Help me then to obey you and act on what you ask of me, proclaiming your goodness and faithfulness to all around me. Amen.
